MOUNCE’S EXPOSITORY DICTIONARY
ὥρα communicates a period of time. It is normally taken to mean “hour.” Three related ideas are communicated by this word. (1) hōra can in a general sense simply refer to an undefined period of time in a day. Mk. 11:11 (2) The Romans divided the daylight time into “twelve hours” (Jn. 11:9). hōra can be used to refer to one of these divisions of a day, such as the “sixth hour” (noon) or the “ninth hour” (3:00 p.m.) (Acts 10:3, 9) (3) Since hōra can designate a specific point in time, the term can also be used to designate a point of time as an occasion for an event. It can refer to the exact “moment” that something takes place (Mt. 8:13)
