No, prayer does not make you more accepted. Prayer is growing in the appreciation of what you’ve already been given. That united to the Son, cherished by the Father, the Father delights to hear you.
Prayer is as incense to him—like a sweet smell rising to him. He’s eager to hear the cries of his children.
Believing his almost incredible promise that despite all the mess, all the coldness that I feel in myself, sinful as I am, right now, however I’m doing, I can come to him and call him Abba.
And the devil will love to fight you here. He will whisper, "Oh no, you can’t pray. Others can, but you? Why would a holy God listen to a sinner like you?"
Do not listen. Do not think you need to prepare yourself to come to pray. And if you feel you’re too sinful, too spiritually cold to pray, just cry out for mercy. Call to the throne of grace and your words will go into the loving ears of your Father, eager to hear from you, eager to bind you up.
And if you still feel you can’t pray, look to the cross.
The cross is God’s guarantee he will hear the prayers of his children. Look to the blood of Christ.
