“We feel we have been punched in the mouth and kicked in the stomach by our own bishops,” says Lee Gatiss, director of the Church Society, speaking about a torrid past few months in the Church of England.
“We’ve got bishops who are not interested in spiritual safeguarding and the discipline that is required in the church. We need a revitalisation of godly discipline in the church and bishops who are prepared to stick out their necks and do hard things in line with God’s word.” Pressed about why he says there is hope in the Church of England, he points out that many of the bishops are personally orthodox. “But they will vote for the compromise solution… it is a problem when we get theologically conservative people joining forces with theologically revisionist people when it comes to church politics.” Gatiss’ solution to the church of England’s problems? “We need a revival.”
