Peter told Jesus to His face that the cross would never happen.
Jesus looked at him and said, get behind me, Satan.
That is not a minor misunderstanding. That is a complete failure to grasp who Jesus is and what He came to do.
And Matthew put it in there on purpose.
Dr. Jeannine Brown spent her dissertation proving that the disciples in Matthew did not understand Jesus. Not really. Five times Matthew calls them people of little faith. Not no faith. Little faith. And according to Matthew, little faith is inadequate.
But here is what that does to the reader.
We identify with them because they follow Jesus. And then we watch them fail. And somewhere in that tension we realize this story was never about them.
It was always about Jesus.
The authority at the end of Matthew does not transfer to the disciples. It stays with Jesus.
He says I will be with you. Not go do this on your own.
That changes everything about how you read the Great Commission.
