Comparing God’s September 11, 2001, judgment on America to His ancient judgment on Sodom, Joel Beeke examines heaven’s somber message to our sinful nation and, more personal, to those who have ignored or rejected the gospel. He addresses the latter in words spoken by the angel just prior to Sodom’s devastation, “Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed” (Gen. 19:17). From this passage he admonishes unbelievers:
- Realize your danger (you are under the wrath of God, just like Sodom).
- Forsake all (you must give up everything to follow Christ).
- Run for your life (you must flee this wicked world).
Beeke sums it up this way, “Oh, I beseech you, run for your life; run straight to Christ. Don’t run to ceremonies, feelings, ministers, works, orthodoxies—but run straight to Christ.”
