How did the early church decide which books belonged in the New Testament—and why these four Gospels? In Session 2, Dr. Craig Blomberg walks through the historical trail that led to the recognition of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John as authoritative Scripture.
You’ll see the canon form over time through:
• Second-century evidence: use by the Apostolic Fathers, challenges from Marcion and Gnosticism
• Third-century trends: Tertullian’s “new covenant” language, Origen’s “disputed books,” and other works sometimes proposed
• Fourth-century crystallization: Athanasius and the councils of Hippo and Carthage
Dr. Blomberg also explains the classic criteria of canonicity: apostolicity, orthodoxy, catholicity, and inspiration.
