How should Christians maintain real doctrinal boundaries without denying other believers—or dividing the Church over secondary issues?
In this video, theologian Gavin Ortlund explains how the New Testament helps us develop a wiser approach to theological disagreement by distinguishing between issues that are central to the gospel and issues where faithful Christians can disagree. By comparing the tone of Romans 14 (where Paul urges patience and unity over disputable matters) with Galatians 1 (where Paul responds urgently to a distortion of the gospel), Ortlund shows that not every doctrinal difference requires the same level of alarm or separation.
This framework is often called theological triage: recognizing that all doctrine matters, but not all doctrines carry the same weight or have the same consequences for Christian fellowship. Ortlund applies this to real-life examples—such as end-times debates about the rapture and the millennium—while emphasizing that Christian love and unity remain central New Testament priorities.
Rather than lowering the importance of doctrine, theological triage helps the Church practice pastoral wisdom: building statements of faith and membership requirements around primary gospel truths, while allowing room for charity and fellowship on secondary and tertiary issues. The goal is not compromise, but a faithful and biblical unity that strengthens the Church’s witness in the world.
This video is part of a broader series on Protestant apologetics, exploring Scripture, doctrine, and church history with clarity, conviction, and grace.
