In this lecture, Larry Hurtado, Emeritus Professor of New Testament Language, Literature & Theology at the University of Edinburgh, explores what made early Christianity so distinctive — and ultimately successful — within the crowded religious landscape of the Roman world.
Hurtado begins by reconstructing a world that was, in his words, “full of gods.” The Roman Empire teemed with religious options: traditional Greco-Roman pantheons, local and regional deities, and popular mystery cults such as Isis, Mithras, and Jupiter Dolichenus. Many of these movements experienced periods of growth and enthusiasm, yet most eventually faded.
Against this backdrop, Hurtado argues that Christianity was fundamentally different. Unlike other cults that coexisted comfortably within a pluralistic system, Christianity made exclusive claims, demanded personal and communal allegiance, and reshaped worship practices in ways that challenged long-standing religious norms. These features, while costly for early believers, proved decisive for Christianity’s long-term vitality.
Importantly, Hurtado emphasizes that Christianity’s rise was not the result of imperial sponsorship. By the time Constantine embraced the movement, Christianity had already demonstrated remarkable growth, resilience, and social presence across the empire. Constantine’s support followed Christianity’s success; it did not create it.
Drawing from his influential work Destroyer of the Gods, Hurtado shows how early Christianity did more than add another option to the Roman religious marketplace — it redefined what “religion” itself would come to mean. This lecture offers a historically grounded explanation for why Christianity endured where so many other ancient religions did not, and why its impact continues to shape the modern world.
