Widening the story beyond a diagnosis |Learning from Listening| Mental Health Awareness Month

When someone discloses their mental health to us, we often want to rush to provide a solution, or say the “right thing” to provide comfort. But instead of speaking, what about listening? As John Swinton says here, very often people with mental health challenges go unheard. The stigma associated with a diagnosis or symptoms like experiencing psychosis can prevent people from seeing that person for the full richness of who they are as an image bearer of Christ. Attentive presence is the gift that we can all offer each other. By listening, we make space for someone to tell their story in their own words, and “maybe that’s the beginning point for healing” as John says.
