At the heart of the Christian gospel is the story of God remaking human beings into the image of Jesus Christ. But how does that transformation happen? In this lecture, Dr. Simeon Zahl contends that, whether we realize or not, “theory of change”––how we think this transformation occurs––informs our spiritual practices and approaches to ministry. Dr. Zahl helpfully examines some common theories of change in Christian ministry, and considers how the teaching of Augustine on human nature might reshape our approach to Christian ministry and spiritual growth.
Simeon Zahl is Professor of Christian Theology at the University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Jesus College. Previously, he taught at the University of Oxford and the University of Nottingham. Simeon is the author most recently of The Holy Spirit and Christian Experience (Oxford University Press, 2020). Alongside his academic work he has a passion for connecting academic theology with the life of the church in the contemporary world. He is also a long time theological advisor to Mockingbird Ministries, and co-host of The Brothers Zahl podcast.
