Ask N.T. Wright Anything: Precision in Faith, Peter the Rock, and the Virgin Birth

In this episode Mike Bird and NT Wright tackle three major theological questions.

First, a listener from Ohio asks how precise our beliefs need to be in order to be “saved”. Tom reframes salvation away from the idea of “going to heaven when you die” and towards the biblical vision of God’s new creation and the defeat of death. They discuss Romans 10, baptism, assurance, and why Christian faith is about trusting Jesus rather than mastering perfect doctrine.

Next, they look at Matthew 16 and ask: Is Peter himself the rock, or is the rock his confession that Jesus is the Messiah? Tom explores early interpretations and how this passage functions within the wider New Testament.

Finally, they take on the significance of the virgin birth—what Isaiah 7:14 really meant, why first-century Jews weren’t expecting a virgin-born Messiah, the difference from pagan “divine birth” myths, and how the story points to God’s grace, the initiative of the Trinity, and Jesus’ true humanity received from Mary.
