MOUNCE’S EXPOSITORY DICTIONARY
Noun: ἐξουσία means “authority, power, right,” and the word is used in a variety of different contexts. God is the ultimate source and possessor of all authority. Some authority God reserves exclusively for himself, to which Jesus alludes when Luke records him saying, “It is not for you to know the times and the seasons which the Father has set by his own authority” (Acts 1:7). God has granted authority to Jesus. The Father gave Jesus “authority to make judgment” (Jn. 5:27), and he gave him authority over all flesh (Jn. 17:2). Set in opposition to the authority of God is the authority claimed by the devil and his minions. exousia is sometimes used with reference to various types of divinely ordained human authority enforced by civil law—such as authority to govern, to own property, or to regulate the peace (Rom. 13:3–6).
