Discussion Questions
-
I suggest that God has inscribed an immigrant identity upon his people in that all the patriarchs were immigrants, God and not Israel owned the land, Jesus undergoes the experiences of an immigrant (and refugee), and 1 Peter (Hebrews too!) speaks of the church as “immigrants and strangers.” What are the theological and practical implications for how we understand our own identity? God and our relationship/response to him?
-
What experience(s) have you had where your stereotypes of “the other” were transformed such that the person you may have formerly dehumanized in some way became a source of enrichment and/or blessing to you?
-
This is simply the flip-side of #2 – what experiences have you had where you were an object of a stereotype and thereby written-off and dehumanized such that your gifts or presence were stifled, unrecognized, and/or rejected?
-
What examples come to mind when you think of an individual, a church, or some kind of ministry actively creating space (i.e., hospitality to strangers) in order to include the “other” or the marginalized? What are the attributes of character traits of this individual/ministry?
