For our next Speaker Series event, the Rev. Dr. Amy Peeler will join us in person to give a talk entitled, "Paul and Mary: Foes or Friends?"

The talk will take place after our 5:30 p.m. Celtic Evening Prayer service on the Waterfront and 6:00 p.m. Dinner in the Parish Hall.

It is a common trope that the apostle Paul ignores women at best, and at worst, berates them. That data of the New Testament is much more powerful and positive. Moving beyond well-worn debates about a few choice passages in Paul, this lecture asks a fresh question: Is Paul aware of the mother of Jesus, and if so, does she make a difference to his presentation of God and the church.

The Rev. Dr. Amy Peeler is the Kenneth T. Wessner Professor of New Testament at Wheaton College, IL and an Associate Priest at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Geneva, IL. Author of Women and Gender of God (2022), “You Are My Son”: The Family of God in the Epistle to the Hebrews (2014), co-author with Patrick Gray of Hebrews: An Introduction and Study Guide (2020), and most recently a commentary on Hebrews (2024). She received her B.A. in Biblical Languages from Oklahoma Baptist University, earned her M. Div. and Ph. D. in New Testament from Princeton Theological Seminary, and served as a Senior Research Fellow with the Logos Institute at the University of St. Andrews. Amy is on the translation committee for the New Living Translation of the Bible. She is an active member of the Institute for Biblical Research, Society of Biblical Literature, and a Fellow with the Center for Pastor Theologians.
