A lecture given by Reinhard Htter (Duke University) on January 16, 2014. John Henry Newman once observed "it is fashionable on all hands now to consider [conscience] in one way or another as a creation of man." Today, almost 150 years after Newman's observation, this view has ascended to the status of conventional wisdom in our public discourse and serves to justify one's self-will as opposed to realizing the moral good. This lecture will defend an alternative elaborated by Thomas Aquinas and Newman that affirms a notion of conscience as a universal principle that brings one to truth in matters of moral judgment.
