Gospels: Historically Reliable Ancient Biographies?

Historically reliable means a text preserves the true core or essential parts of what happened, even if not every detail is included. At minimum, it provides a faithful overall representation of events, and this standard applies to all ancient literature.

The Gospels meet this basic standard, beginning with the idea that their authors intended to record accurate accounts. They belong to the genre of ancient biography, which focuses on a person’s life rather than an entire historical period. This is shown by their emphasis on a central figure, their structure (starting with ancestry and moving quickly to public life), and their focus on revealing character through words and actions.

They also match typical features of ancient biographies, such as their length and selective storytelling. Unlike ancient novels, they do not contain fictional plots, romantic themes, or invented characters. Instead, they include real historical figures who lived close to the time of writing, reinforcing that they are rooted in historical biography rather than fiction.
