Socrates said, “Beauty alone has this privilege, to be the most clearly visible and the most loved.” Beauty arrests our attention and draws us like nothing else. In the Symposium, Plato writes about a “ladder of love” described by his teacher Socrates. First, we become attracted to a particular beautiful person. Next, we see that beauty is possessed by other persons. We then see beauty in nature and in society. Finally, we can arrive at “beauty absolute, separate, simple, and everlasting, which without diminution and without increase, or any change, is imparted to the ever-growing and perishing beauties of all other things.” This beauty Augustine called God.
