The Farrer hypothesis is a possible solution to the synoptic problem that suggests that Luke and Matthew are not independent of one another which is contrary to the popular two document hypothesis which says the opposite. The theory also advocates the non-existence of the hypothetical Q document and says that Luke used Matthew and Mark and in turn Matthew also used Mark as a source.
The Wilke hypothesis also known as the Matthean Posteriority hypothesis which the word posterior meaning (last) is a similar position to the Farrer hypothesis which rejects the Q document and advocates Markan priority that both Matthew and Luke used Mark as a source but instead of Luke using Matthew, this position reverses it and says that Matthew instead used Luke-Acts and the Gospel of Mark as sources. Both the Farrer hypothesis and the Wilke hypothesis agree with the two document hypothesis that Mark is the first Gospel.
The two scholars in this video will be debating on which position explains the evidence best. Professor Mark Goodacre upholds the Farrer hypothesis while Professor Robert K. MacEwen upholds the Wilke hypothesis.
