Pope Leo XIV releases his highly anticipated encyclical on artificial intelligence. In it, the Holy Father compares the emergence of AI to the industrial revolution and calls on those shepherding it to respect human dignity and serve the common good. Charles Camosy, award-winning author and professor of moral theology, says even secular audiences are following the Holy Father’s words. He also says the encyclical can play a major role in keeping AI in check, in the same way the Vatican has tried to curtail the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
