Ancient historians commonly paraphrased, reshaped, and sometimes even created speeches when writing history. Because there were no recording devices or reliable note-taking systems, historians had to rely on memory or reconstruct what was likely said. Their goal was not to produce exact, word-for-word transcripts, but to capture the essence, intent, and plausibility of a speech—what it probably would have sounded like in that situation.

Examples from classical historians show that speeches were often crafted even when no one could have recorded them, such as in battles where no witnesses survived. This practice was considered acceptable as long as the speech reflected what was appropriate or likely for the occasion.

Applying this to biblical texts, speeches in works like Acts or the Gospels are likely not verbatim records. Instead, they may represent summaries or reconstructions based on the core message being preached at the time.
