The use of force to stop Russia’s onslaught against Ukraine is a “just war”, but there is no responsible alternative response for the West other than the current decisions to give defensive weapons, impose sanctions and offer humanitarian assistance. Those conclusions were reached by panelists at a Religion Media Centre briefing, who considered the moral complexities and dilemmas of decisions that have not stopped the loss of life. Trevor Barnes hosted the discussion with guests: Professor Jolyon Mitchell, Director of the Centre for Theology and Public Issues, New College, University of Edinburgh, who specialises in religion, violence and peacebuilding; Professor Ilan Z Baron, School of Government and International Affairs, University of Durham, who has written extensively on the ethics of war; Sarah Snyder, founding director of the Rose Castle Foundation and until 2021 the Archbishop of Canterbury's Special Advisor for Reconciliation; and Professor Esther Reed, professor of theological ethics at the University of Exeter.
