Today to travel across the world you just need a plane ticket and you've arrived in less than two days. 200 years ago, it wasn't so simple, and was much more dangerous. Nevertheless hundreds of thousands of British risked everything to make the journey down the coast of West Africa, around the Cape of Good Hope, and across the Indian and Southern oceans to Australia and New Zealand.
In this video, Professor Nigel Biggar explains why the British peoples were motivated to do that – from famine to trade to religious reasons. The Colonial Period today gets a bad wrap, but as Professor Biggar explains, many good things resulted from the increased British presence too, such as the ending of tribal warfare, the establishment of peace, and the conversion to Christianity of many of the Polynesian population who lived there, which helped to end the practices of headhunting and slavery.
